- Products used in bird control -
There is a large amount of bird control materials and devices on the market
today, some work and some are a waste of money. Some times a product is very
good but is used the wrong way or against the wrong type of bird and fails
that's why a professional installer like Arizona Wings-N-Stings is your best
solution to solving bird control problems.
A number of options exist for managing or preventing nuisance pigeons and
birds:
Pigeons often prefer to use the interior portions of buildings to nest and
roost if an opportunity for access is provided. Openings to lofts, steeples,
vents, and eaves can be blocked with 1/4 - 1/2" galvanized wire mesh, wood, sheet
metal, or other solid construction materials to prevent pigeons from entering.
Controlling pigeons on the exterior surfaces of buildings often requires
considerably more effort. The most effective and permanent methods of control
involve structural modifications which either physically exclude pigeons from
the preferred surface or make it difficult for the birds to rest comfortably on
the exposed building surfaces. Physical exclusion can be accomplished by
installing weather resistant netting, wire screening, sheet metal, or other
materials in a manner that will restrict access to the roosting sites.
Pigeons prefer to roost on level surfaces. Roosting areas can be modified to
create a sloping surface, at a 60 degree incline or more, by installing wire
mesh or other material to eliminate the level surfaces. There are also a number
of non-toxic sticky substances registered as tactile repellents for bird control
efforts. Birds tend to avoid landing upon treated areas but the effectiveness is
usually lost over time.
Nest removal:
Although time-consuming and unpleasant, removing nests will help depress
populations. Nest destruction must be followed by pigeon-proofing the structure
to achieve maximum population control.
Toxicants:
There is only one product registered for lethal control of pigeons
and can only be used by certified pest control operators. The product is
generally not appropriate or feasible for most nuisance bird situations. We are
strongly against using this product, you never know where the birds will land
when dieing and what will eat it.
Here is a basic list of what you may see installed on homes and building
around your town.
 |
Bird spike comes in a number of
different styles to fit all sorts of ledges and build outs of building and
other structures. Stainless steel spikes are the best for long lasting use,
they are not sharp but are long enough that pigeons and other larger birds
can't stand on them.
TOUGH. Long-lasting provides long term maintenance-free protection.
TRANSPARENT. Works without marring the look of your property.
It's practically invisible and can be painted to blend to be less visible.
FLEXIBLE. Mounts easily on flat, curved or irregular surfaces - whether
wood, metal or masonry.
ENVIRONMENT SAFE AND NON-LETHAL. Nothing to rust or deteriorate.
NOTE: Sparrows and wrens can build their nests inside the spike so if small
birds are a problem this is not the product to use.

 |
Post and Wire systems are great for
parapet wall ledges and window ledges where you don not want to see the
product. Post and Wire systems create an unstable landing area for pigeons
and larger birds, but smaller birds like sparrows can stand on the wire with
no effect. |
 |
Bird Coils come in 4" or 6" and look
like a slinky stretched out on the parapet wall. Bird coils are designed for
pigeons that may land on the parapet wall and when they land on the coils it
creates an unstable surface by folding over under the birds weight and
scaring off the bird. |
 |
Daddy Long Leggs are used on Ac units,
streetlights, boats and other locations where pigeons fly onto. The small
wire rods are stainless steel and rotate in the breeze and wave menacingly,
interfering with the birds as they attempt to land. The units are
inconspicuous from short distances and practically invisible from 25' or
more. |
|
Gutter spike is installed on the leading
edges of the gutter to help prevent pigeons from sitting on the edge of the
gutter or nesting inside the gutter which pigeons will do if given the
chance. |
 |
Bird control netting comes in several
different materials, sizes, colors and is used for exclusion of birds from a
variety of locations that are enclosed or semi-enclosed. Net sizes are 3/4"
for sparrows & swallows, 1 1/8" for starlings & blackbirds, 2" for pigeons
and larger birds. Netting is usually attached to a cable system to hold the
netting in place.
|
 |
Bird control gels are applied to a
surface where birds land, when the bird steps on the gel it is very sticky
and the birds will avoid the area. Problems are that it is only a short term
solution as the gel gets dirty, feathers and some small birds stuck in it
and die.
We don't recommended using this product and if we are doing a service where
this product has been used we charge additional $ because of the hassle and
mess.

 |
Plastic bird spike came out as a cheaper alternative to stainless steel
spike but this product doesn't hold up in Arizona or Nevada temperatures and gets
brittle and breaks. The spikes themselves are also wider and that allows pigeons
to hold onto the spike and start to build a nest in them.
See Freeway Underpass Project
Spend a little more and get better results that will last many,
many
years more that the plastic spike.

Solar Powered "WHIRLY BIRD" This product
covers a 5' circular area and is designed to keep birds off of A/C units,
boats, chimneys and other places where pigeons are a problem by spinning
around continuously during the day light hours.
When birds try to land they get hit with the antennas that stick out,
larger 110v units are available for billboards and large coverage areas. |
 |
Bird shock systems
provide a low voltage shock to the birds when they come in contact with the
wires, Very similar to a dog shock fence. Shock track is usually run on ridge top areas of the roof, along parapet
walls of other areas pigeons and larger birds like to land or roost.
Chargers for the units come in a solar powered charger or units that
can plug into the 110v wall outlet. This product is very effective and comes in a variety of styles and
materials that can fit on most any building and structures.

Trapping:
Pigeons may be live-trapped on buildings and other likely locations. Live-traps
for pigeons are available. Pre-baiting the traps with grains that the birds are
accustomed to will increase success. A variety of baits, including cracked corn,
millet, popcorn, sunflower seeds, peas, bread, and peanuts can be used. Water is
available in the trap at all times. Trapping in any given area is usually will
reduce the number of pigeons quickly and humanely, it is labor intensive, and
most of the time a great reduction measure. |
 |
Acoustical and visual repellents are
another means of reducing pigeon problems,
but pigeons quickly become accustomed to these types of scare devices. There is
only limited success using helium-filled eyespot balloons, predator (owl)
decoys, and reflective Mylar tape in roosting areas. The same limited success is
achieved by the use of noisemaking devices such as tape-recorded bird
distress calls, firing of blank cartridges, and the use of propane-fired
cannons in agricultural areas. Combining a number of techniques and frequent
changes in the duration and location of the repellent may increase success
but are all labor intensive and temporarily. |
|
|
|
Visual deterrents will sometimes work for a
short period of time, but over the long haul they are all ineffective. The
reflective tape some times works at keeping away woodpeckers if hung in
strips of 3 attached at the top and about 2 - 3' long - hang them above
where the woodpecker is doing the damage. |
